Nyandarua DCI Boss Killed, Uasin Gishu MCA Injured in Horrific Nine-Vehicle Crash at Karai

Nyandarua County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO), Senior Superintendent John Rioba, has died following a devastating nine-vehicle pile-up at the notorious Karai blackspot along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, while Uasin Gishu nominated MCA Regina Chumba sustained chest injuries and is receiving treatment. 

The tragic accident occurred on Monday evening, June 15, at around 4:50 pm when a Sinotruk lorry travelling from Nairobi towards Nakuru reportedly suffered brake failure and lost control. Witnesses and preliminary police reports indicate that the truck rammed into a Toyota Land Cruiser moving in the same direction, causing it to veer into oncoming traffic and trigger a massive chain-reaction collision involving nine vehicles. 
Senior Superintendent Rioba, who was driving an Isuzu D-Max, sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was rushed to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, dealing a major blow to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). 

Among those injured was Uasin Gishu MCA Regina Chumba, who complained of chest pains after the collision and was taken to hospital for treatment. Two foreign nationals travelling in one of the vehicles also sustained minor injuries. 

Police said the driver of the runaway lorry fled the scene immediately after the accident and is being sought by authorities. All the damaged vehicles have since been towed to Naivasha Police Station pending inspection as investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue. 
The incident once again highlights the dangers of the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, particularly the Karai section, which has witnessed several fatal accidents over the years. The latest tragedy comes amid growing concerns over rising road carnage across the country, with authorities repeatedly citing speeding, brake failure, poor lane discipline, and loss of vehicle control among the leading causes of fatal crashes in Kenya.
